Animal welfare

Dignity for all

Camst group considers animal welfare policies to be an integral part of the sustainability principles governing the company’s decisions on production chain development. Without hypocrisy, step by step, towards a fundamental goal.

Camst recognises that the concept of animal welfare includes both physical and mental health and the freedom to engage in normal behaviour. It implements a long-standing system of production chain audits to assess the number of vendors already voluntarily committed to a higher level of animal welfare than required by industry regulations. As a result of this activity – intended to identify the vendors with the highest standards, business with which will be increased – the company has updated its animal welfare policy, based on respect for the Five Freedoms used to define animals’ wellbeing.

Egg production chain commitment

On the plate, all eggs look the same, but there are actually major differences. There are now well-established production chains for “barn” eggs, from hens which live on the ground, in spaces where they are free to move around and not in cages as in the past.
The confinement of animals in cages is one of the first practices Camst has chosen to combat. It has therefore introduced a process which will eliminate battery poultry farms from the whole egg production chain by 2023, and from that of egg products by 2025. Year by year, real results have gradually been achieved. In 2017 Camst received the Good Egg Award presented by Compassion in World Farming (CIWF), the world’s biggest international animal welfare organisation.
